It only took a few weeks to realize the beautiful, 100-year-old house we rented from Senner Properties was plagued by problems: a flea infestation, squirrel droppings beneath the kitchen cabinets, black mold growing under the cheap shower surrounds, a leaking master shower, a leaking bedroom roof and resulting mold in the carpet, and — as we discovered by accident — smoke detectors that hadn't been outfitted with batteries (a legal responsibility of the landlord, and a potentially dangerous oversight).
There was a nice dog and I got to pet him.
(Note on the letter pictured: We did break our lease after finding employment in another state, but we also secured a new tenant to take the lease over, following all of Senner Properties' guidelines.)
The kicker, though, was the illegal deduction from our security deposit for things like "sweeping," "paint scuffs" and "lightbulbs," all of which are considered normal wear and tear. These deductions are included in a letter that begins, "Thank you for taking good care of our property." We treated the house as our own, and only requested action on problems when it was absolutely necessary.
Senner Properties are so intent on pinching pennies that they threw bandaids over each problem. A great example is the five days in the middle of winter that we spent without hot water while the landlord avoided buying a new water heater (despite his own handyman's suggestions to replace it). No rent deductions, no sense of urgency on their end. Or the time we brought the leaking, moldy shower surrounds to their attention, and they literally caulked right over the mold without removing it or exploring the cause. It's still there, growing between the plastic and the wall.
So, renter beware: You might find a beautiful house with Senner Properties, but what you see won't be what you get.
OMG. Just don't
We really like the Jim & Mary. Both helpful & nice without ever being intrusive to our home. Great landlords.
